I originally wrote this just about beer but it also pertains to all foods that contain gluten. Gluten is a protein that is found in most grains and in certain individuals can cause a lot of gastric distress. The problem with intestinal inflammation in is that your body spends a lot of energy trying to heal your gut instead of healing your sore knees, shoulders, elbows and back.
Examples of food and drink that contain gluten are as follows:
White Flour, Whole Wheat Flour, Durum Wheat, Graham Flour, Triticale, Kamut, Semolina, Spelt, Wheat Germ, Wheat Bran, Pasta, Couscous, Bread, Flour Tortillas, Cookies, Cakes, Muffins, Pastries, Cereal, Crackers, Beer, Gravy, Dressings, Sauces. In other words a lot of what everyone usually eats.
If you experience any of the following symptoms after drinking beer or eating any of the above you should look for a new source of alcohol and gluten free foods to consume:
Digestive issues such as gas, bloating, diarrhea and even constipation.
Keratosis Pilaris, (also known as ‘chicken skin’ on the back of your arms). This tends be as a result of a fatty acid deficiency and vitamin A deficiency secondary to fat-malabsorption caused by gluten damaging the gut.
Fatigue, brain fog or feeling tired after drinking beer or eating a meal that contains gluten.
Diagnosis of an autoimmune disease such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Rheumatoid arthritis, Ulcerative colitis, Lupus, Psoriasis, Scleroderma or Multiple sclerosis.
Neurologic symptoms such as dizziness or feeling of being off balance.
Diagnosis of chronic fatigue or fibromyalgia.
Inflammation, swelling or pain in your joints such as fingers, knees or hips.
Mood issues such as anxiety, depression, mood swings and ADD.
Of course I’m not a doctor nor do I play one on the internet and these symptoms may or may not be related to gluten intolerance. The best course is to eliminate glutens from your food and drink and see if the symptoms decrease or go away entirely. If they continue to be problematic see your doctor not your trainer/coach.
If you are the least bit gluten sensitive eliminating this damaging protein from your diet will yield faster results in both your training and body transformation goals than anything else you can do in the short term.
